Gary came up from Atlanta and has been in Amherst for 27 years. He started raising dubia 12 years ago, and he has been doing it by hand ever since.
A colony starts with about 800 females and 300 males. It takes months before it produces anything. After that a colony gives for 6 to 9 months, and then it is done and a new one takes its place. There are 45 of them in the building, all at different stages.
Every tote gets sorted every 30 to 45 days. The bugs walk down through a screen. Its holes let one size through and hold the rest back. That is why we know what is in the box.
None of this is automated. It is hand work, a sorting screen, and a lot of years.
