Why Are Adult and Extra Large Dubia Roaches Hard to Get?
Wondering why adult and extra large Dubia roaches are hard to order in bulk? Learn why adults are breeding stock, why extra large ships with other sizes, and how to request these sizes.
If you tried to order a large number of adults or extra large Dubia roaches, you may have found the farm has limits. Adults and extra large work differently from the other four sizes.
Why can't I order a lot of adult Dubia roaches?
Adults are the farm's breeding stock. The farm depends on them.
Gary Becker has raised Dubia roaches for 12 years and keeps 45 colonies. Every baby on the farm came from an adult. Those adults are what make every other size possible. Selling them in large numbers would cut into the colonies that produce the bugs shipped each week.
Ten thousand adult roaches is close to ten full colonies of breeding stock. Selling that many would shrink the whole farm's output, not just one order. The farm sells adults, but keeps the count low so the colonies stay healthy.
Steps, not to scale
- We start at 25. That is the smallest pack we send.
- Packs of 10,000 come in extra small and small.
Pack sizes go from 25 to 10,000. The largest packs, 1,000 and 10,000, are only for extra small and small. For adults and extra large, you order in smaller quantities. That is how the farm protects the breeding stock.
Why is extra large kept short?
Extra large is kept in short supply, and the farm sends it alongside other sizes in most orders.
Extra large roaches are close to adults in size. The farm holds that size tight for the same reason it limits adults: those bugs are near the end of the growth cycle and close to breeding age. Selling them in large, standalone packs would pull too many from the colony cycle. Most orders with extra large include other sizes as well.
Who are adults and extra large for?
Keepers of larger reptiles and breeders are the most common buyers of adults and extra large. Our size guide describes extra large as for big animals that need a full meal in one bite, and adult as for large reptiles and keepers who breed their own. If you are not sure which size fits your animal, check with your vet or a species-specific care guide.

A common keeper guideline is to pick a feeder no wider than the space between your reptile's eyes. Check with your vet or a reptile care guide for your species. For snakes, chameleons, tortoises, or any species you are unsure about, ask your vet or a keeper who knows that species before stepping up in size.
How do I order adults or extra large if I need them?
Send a request and say how many you need. Gary checks the colonies and comes back to you with what he can send.
There is no fixed number listed on the site. What the farm can spare changes week to week with the colonies. The approval-based order process exists for exactly this reason: the farm confirms before accepting an order. If adults or extra large are what your reptile needs, put the count in your request. We confirm what we can send, when it ships, and what it costs.
Frequently asked questions
**Why are extra small and small easier to order?** Babies hatch and pass through those sizes in the largest numbers. The farm has more of them to ship at any given time. Adult and extra large are at the end of the life cycle, so there are fewer.
**Can I get 10,000 adult Dubia roaches in one order?** No. The 10,000-pack size is for extra small and small only. Ten thousand adults would be close to ten full colonies of breeding stock.
**What if I only need a handful of adults for a large reptile?** Send a request with your reptile's size and the count you need. Smaller counts of adults are sometimes available. Gary will confirm what he can send.
**What size works for a fully grown bearded dragon?** Many keepers of adult bearded dragons use large; some use extra large. Use the common keeper guideline: a feeder no wider than the space between the eyes. Ask your vet or a keeper who knows your species to confirm the right size.
**Why does the farm send extra large with other sizes?** The farm usually ships extra large alongside other sizes so the order is filled while the breeding stock is protected.
